THE THIRD LUNG shoot

Tom Farrelly and his band The Third Lung, photographed in a pub garden in Windsor, big flash just to right of camera, high up, with the ambient light dropped down for some drama.

Bottom image is The Third Lung at Charborough Studios recording a live video.

Ian Todd

Iv’e known Ian a while now, I first heard him play at an open mike evening and really liked his style.

He came to record at Live@Charborough and I also made a time to photograph him so he can have some promo images he can use in print and web.

BABYHOWL portraits

Iv’e photographed Babyhowl a few times now for various reasons, CD covers, promo images etc. The portraits below are from a very quick session after a live video recording at Charborough Studio. The lads had finished the last bit of recording so I set up a gridded light to one side of them, then photographed them one at a time.

I really like these gritty harsh images-it suits they’re music perfectly. Check them out here.

Duncan: Saxophonist

Duncan is a Saxophonist of great talent, i met him through a fellow band member of his who plays keyboards.
He lives in Kingston upon Thames in some trendy flats right next to the Thames so that was our location.
Once on the roof we found a couple of places to shoot

The right image was by some air conditioning units that serves the flats, i thought they were a good element in the image to ‘anchor’ Duncan to- i suppose they reminded me of speakers in some way.
The left image was with Duncan against the railings that go round the edge of the flats, i liked the lead-in lines of the rail forcing your eye on to Duncan and his fantastic saxaphone which was truly a work of art!.

The lighting was very simple, one flash with an umbrella, held firmly by my trusty sidekick John, with the flash balanced with the existing ambient light. The right side image has the ambient light dropped  for effect.
I gave Duncan a series of images in colour and black and white that he could use for print and web.

THE NEVERTONES

The Nevertones, runners up in the Hard Rock Café ‘Battle of the Bands’ contest.

I shot some images for their CD cover recently, and at the end of the shoot I quickly put a white background, placed each band member in front of it one at a time, lit the background with one flash that also lit the sides of their faces and then lit them from the front with another flash, very quick and easy to produce some great individual images for them.

ELLA MARTINI SHOOT: behind the scenes…

A behind the scenes shot from the recent shoot with the fantastic Ella Martini reveals what exactly what goes into a shoot to get a result like the final image below, as you can see the background was lit with two flashes to make it white with a couple of boards to stop the flash hitting the side of Ella, and one flash facing Ella to light her.

Image converted to black and white for a classy look that sums up Ella

THE SHA LA LAS’

The Sha La Las’, one of my fave bands, we got together a while ago to shoot some promo images for their latest CD cover, this image was taken in an old disused garage. The lighting is fairly simple, one flash outside behind the band to rim light them against the dark evening sky, and on flash from the front to light the band, converted to mono with a cool’ish tint

ODETTE: singer/songwriter

A videographer friend of mine wanted to film me doing a shoot with a musician for his portfolio, so we decided to approach the fantastic Odette who has graced this blog a few times before.

We all met up one Sunday afternoon in a local business park-not the most glamorous location on first viewing, but when you learn how to use a location suddenly the most mundane wall or stairs can become interesting with the right angle and some lighting…..

Our first image is a wooden wall that houses the bins for all the local businesses, I had great slanted beams that drew your attention to Odette, especially when I used a grid on a portable flash aimed at her face witch left the light to fall off  from the centre.odetteblog 2014-1

Second image down is a staircase that is just behind the wooden wall in the first image, I changed the lighting to a flash with an umbrella box to camera right pointing down to Odette who was sitting on the steps, I used the lead in lines of the hand rail to guide your eye into the image.

Third image down is a metal wall that is to the right of the stairs, I liked the juxtaposition of the smooth wall and the grasses with Odette slightly to the right of the image.

Fourth image is in the studio against a white background, it’s a simple portrait of Odette with her guitar, lit with an umbrella box directly in front of her and angled down to get some shadows under the chin.

Many thanks to Odette for the shoot as it was a cold November day and she dressed for summer for the images!

ELLA MARTINI in the studio

I did another shoot for the fantastic Ella Martini at Charborough Studios recently, we did a few full length shots on a white background and then concentrated on head and shoulders shots against a grey background with a flash over Ella’s head to emphasise her cheekbones

Second image down is a newspaper piece on Ella with my image used very nicely

On location with BRIGHT SHADOWS

I first photographed Bright Shadows at Jagz last year and they recently got in touch to produce some images for their forthcoming CD and general promo use.

The top images are from our session in Reading town centre on a Sunday morning, i had spotted these brightly coloured door a while ago and had made a mental note to use them in the future ( i always have some locations tucked away in my brain for future use)

We had started at 8am on a Sunday morning at the very top of a very empty Oracle car park, after unloading all the gear and setting a light up i managed to take one test image before a security guard came over and asked us not to take any more pictures as we had no permission-fair enough, so thats how we ended up in front of some very colourful doors…..BS

The monochrome image below was taken a few hundred yards from my house, it is a large grey wall that lead into a tunnel, Helen was wearing white, Raji was wearing black so the mid grey wall was ideal-no point in making this a colour image!

Their CD Launch Party is on the 22nd August @ Marilyn’s Loft Bar, Monroe’s, St Mary’s Butts, Reading
